On Kawara (Japanese (active United States), 1933–2014)

These twelve canvases are part of a series of over 1,900 date paintings that On Kawara created beginning on January 4, 1966, each of which was begun and finished on the date it declares. As the years pass, the banality of each date, emphasized by the deadpan nature in which it is painted---in simple letters and numbers on a monochrome canvas---takes on historical and metaphysical dimensions.
